    OK, but not mindblowing

This lens has got some bad rep, which may be a little unfair, or fair dependant on expectations, price, and comparisons with other lenses.

On the positives, Its well built, not too large / heavy and IQ in the centre and mid range focal lengths is very good. Its a good size when attached to a Sony full frame camera, and its focal length is useful. the f/4 constant aperture is nice, but not overly exciting.

The negatives - wide open it can be a little soft at the wide end but if you stop down the aperture a bit this does sharpen up nicely. Its pricey for a f4, and when compared to the superb, but very expensive 24-70 f2.8 G Master then it does make this lens performance look poor in comparison. However it is not so much that the 24-70mm f4 is quite average, or the 24-70 GM is so blisteringly good, its probably a combination of the two. If you are a professional, and do have the money then the 24-70mm f2.8 G Master is unquestionably the better choice for image quality over the 24-70mm f4.

We have to remember that today, lenses have to work very hard to keep up with the super high resolution sensors, and work hard to keep image edges also sharp, which on the mirrorless systems (with short flange distances) can apparently be a challenge, particularly at the wider side of focal lengths.

So will you be disappointed with the 24-70mm f4? Certainly if you are pixel peeping the edges shooting wide open at f4 on a high resolution 42MP sensor you may well be disappointed. But otherwise the lens performs acceptably well, and better than some of the reviews would lead you to believe. Until the G Master came out, there was no other choice of a native 24-70mm on the Sony. Now that the G Master is out, it would be nice to see the 24-70mm f4 come down in price by a good chunk. If it did would make it more palatable in terms of value for money which would sit more comfortably with me, and many other potential users. If the 24-70mm f/4 were priced at a lower price point from the start then it probably would have avoided some of the criticism it has received from users and reviewers, who expectations were higher than the lens's capability to deliver, understandable when the lens price is relatively high.
