Product Description

The Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM Lens (SEL85F14GM) is one of the new, beautifully crafted G MASTER range of lenses. Full frame coverage telephoto prime lens designed to compliment the Sony A7 collection of cameras. Designed specifically for full-frame, the lens sits in the company’s G Master (GM) professional lenses, which represents the best performing group of lenses that Sony has ever made. Designed and built to the strictest precision standards, this lens offers superb optical performance throughout the frame, right up to its widest f1.4 aperture setting. A focus mode switch, focus hold button, and aperture ring with switchable click stops provide professional control for a wide range of shooting situations. Offers stunning optical clarity and speed with a fantastic bokeh. Suited to professional portrait photographers. Advance features include an 11 blade aperture (renders the surrounding out-of-focus area smoothly), super-fast auto-focus and Dust and moisture resistant.

A superb focal length for portraiture, the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM from Sony is a fast, short-telephoto lens designed for E-mount mirrorless digital cameras. Offering flattering perspective and fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, this lens is adept at isolation focus for shallow depth of field effects, as well as performing in low-light conditions. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and one XA (extreme aspherical) element, which significantly controls spherical aberrations for a high degree of image sharpness and clarity. Additionally, a Nano AR coating has been applied to limit ghosting and lens flare for increased contrast and colour fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. Pairing a bright f/1.4 aperture with a short-telephoto focal length, this 85mm lens is ideally suited for portraiture and other situations where focus control is paramount.

Complementing the optical assets, this lens is also notable for its inclusion of an 11-blade circular diaphragm to produce smooth, soft-edged bokeh with selective focus imagery. For controlling focus, a linear SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) is employed that is quick and quiet, and also lends more responsive control for manual focus operation. The lens also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to support shooting in inclement conditions and a dedicated focus hold button, AF/MF switch, and manual aperture ring lend further control while shooting.

The Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM G Master lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations. Additionally, these lenses feature robust and intuitive-to-handle physical designs to benefit both photography and cine applications. Also compatible with APS-C models where it will provide a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.

One XA element is incorporated into the optical design, which features superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other spherical aberrations. Three extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and colour fringing for improved clarity and colour neutrality. A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and colour rendering in strong lighting conditions.

A linear SSM system and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control. Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberised control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures. Manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.

The very best full frame 85mm portrait lens... so I went and sold it.

If you want the best quality portrait lens for full frame Sony cameras, and price and size is not an issue, then this is the lens.
Sony FE 85mm f1.4 G Master is uncompromisingly superb. Fantastic image quality from edge to edge with lovely, lovely bokeh - sharp from wide open, little CA or detracting artefacts, and did I mention very smooth bokeh?

Its a large lens, but feels OK sat on a Sony A7 series, the manual aperture ring, with selectable clicked apertures is tactile, and very useful, I wish all Sony lenses had this feature. Likewise the focus lock button is useful feature. When shooting at f1.4 Sony's Eye AF is recommended due to the small depth of field.

The Autofocus is accurate, and not the fastest, but for a lens in its class it is very precise and faster than many. Users have complained about the noise in focusing, but only becomes an issues if using autofocus and on camera audio in video, and if you are doing this then the question does have to be asked why?? Get off board microphones / audio setup which you should be doing unless you are a complete amateur or not bothered about audio, and if you are not bothered, then there's no need to complain then!

In my opinion Sony FE 85mm f1.4 GMaster lens has topped the classic lenses like the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM or Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G and is the ultimate portrait lens, particularly on a Sony system of course.

I have now sold my Sony FE 85mm f1.4 G Master ..... "WHAT!!" I hear you ask.... Did you hear that right .... Why the earth have I sold it? ...... Let me tell you.

The Sony GM is a large-ish and expensive lens. It is definitely the best portrait lens in terms off image quality, bar none. No issues there.
But a new lens came along .... the Sony FE 85mm f1.8 - when I tried this new beauty its really a terrific lens, small, compact and lightweight and a very good performer. No its not as superb as the G Master, but its still pretty darned good. In fact it is equal if not better than the Zeiss Batis, is cheaper, and more compact. It a great little performer all round, ... and a lot less dosh than the GM.

I am, after all, an enthusiast photographer. I do like value for money. I could not justify keeping and using a £1500 + lens when the new Sony 85mm f1.8 is almost as good, and a lot less money. Call me strange, but it worried me every time I used the GM as it is an expensive piece of glass. As a non professional, I feel a lot more comfortable taking out a lens a third the price and smaller, than I did the GM. So now for me the relatively diminutive in size and high performing Sony FE 85mm f1.8 is now best for MY NEEDS and budget, and for taking out and comfortably using and enjoying it.

However if you are a professional, and want the very best portrait lens, then simply get the Sony FE 85mm f1.4 G Master, particularly for in the studio .... and maybe also consider the new Sony 85mm f1.8 to have in your pocket as a backup or travelling.
