Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 ZA Lens, SEL55F18Z designed exclusively for the Sony mirrorless compact system cameras. Designed with the new "Full Frame" Alpha A7 and A7R cameras in mind. Provides superior optical performance by using the World renowned optics of Carl Zeiss. The large f/1.8 aperture provides for excellent low-light sensitivity and depth-of-field, while a smooth and quiet AF is great for creating movies. The optics are housed within a stylish black aluminium alloy exterior, a great match to your Sony Camera. The Zeiss 55mm lens is a high resolution general purpose lens suitable for a vast array of photography and cinematography types. Super sharp throughout the aperture range the Sony Zeiss FE 55mm F1.8 ZA has attained excellent reviews from professionals.

The Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Lens is a prime, normal focal length lens featuring a very fast and bright f/1.8 maximum aperture to support working in dimly-lit conditions and for greater control over focus for shallow depth of field imagery. The sophisticated Sonnar optical design enables high resolution and sharpness with optimized low-light shooting capabilities. A Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and colour fidelity.

Additionally, a dust- and moisture-resistant construction ensures this lens's use in tough environmental conditions. This prime normal-length lens features a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture to benefit working in low-light conditions and for greater control over the plane of focus.

    Super sharp 55mm

There are some fabulous Sony lenses - and the the Sony 55mm and 35mm prime lenses are two of the best in terms of outright sharpness. Make no doubt about it, when coupled with the auto focus on the Sony A7 series cameras, this 55mm makes bitingly sharp images with strong contrast. Bokeh is good, though not as smooth as other lenses. The lens is compact, and well built, perfect size for both the full frame, or APS-C bodies.

The 55mm offers great usability in low light situations. Manual focus works well, with the image magnification of the EVF. It is acceptably fast for street and landscape photography. The f1.8 aperture gives good shallow depth of field rendering, yet the in focus points of the image are still bitingly sharp. Unless you are working against really strong light there is good CA control, with minimal colour fringing.
What I don't like about the lens is that sometimes portraits can look very clinical with this lens, and the slightly harsher / nervous bokeh is not as smooth as some other Sony lenses.

Improvements - I would like a separate aperture control ring as on the GM series.
Despite its relatively high price its a fantastically sharp, standard, prime, fast lens, and is often my goto lens, so recommended.
