Product Description

Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 35mm F2.8 ZA Lens, SEL35F28Z designed exclusively for the Sony E-Mount mirrorless compact system cameras. Full frame compatible prime lens offers exceptional performance for both the professional full frame cameras, and the APS-C sensors. Compact and versatile 35mm focal length offering outstanding performance and contrast making it ideal for the new full frame bodies. The Sony Zeiss FE 35mm has a dust and moisture resistant design and a 49mm filter size.

The Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens is a prime, wide-angle lens that features a fast, bright f/2.8 maximum aperture to support enhanced low-light performance and greater control over focus for shallow depth of field and selective focus imagery. Three double-sided aspherical elements, totalling six aspherical surfaces, work to minimize spherical aberrations and contribute to notable image sharpness. A Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and colour fidelity.

An internal focusing mechanism maintains the overall lens size during focusing and aids in faster, more responsive performance. Additionally, a dust- and moisture-resistant construction ensures this lens' use in tough environmental conditions.

    Its a Cracker!

The Sony FE 35mm f2.8 is a superb lens, in terms of outright sharpness, image quality, look, rendition, smooth bokeh.... and its tiny!

On paper, laying out the facts on this nifty 35mm theres not really much that this lens would seem to appeal with. Fixed 35mm prime is limiting. f2.8 not super fast, small but vignettes quite a bit, expensive. So its small. Is that it?

The compact size makes it a fantastic lens for travelling. Its extremely portable and lightweight, yet packs a mighty punch in image quality.
The punchy 35mm offers great contrast, low chromatic aberration and low distortion. Sharpness is superb, being extremely sharp in the centre of the frame even wide open at F2.8. Its not as good towards the edges, but it's still pretty impressive. At f5.6-f11 it will pretty much out-resolve any sensor currently out there, or that will be produced for some years to come, and of course its full frame compatible. 35mm makes a great standard lens also on APS-C cropped sensors, and its small size also lends itself to the A6000 series.

Whilst it does exhibit some vignetting, it is not as bad as some reviews would suggest, and is probably about average in its class with about 1 and a half stops in the extreme corners. However as the lens has no other significant flaws, its easy to see why this "normal" vignetting may have been jumped upon. Personally I don't mind a little vignetting, and often add some vignetting post processing. Some vignetting helps you to draw your eye into the image, and feels perfectly natural. Also vignetting is straight forward to correct post processing (or done automatically within cameras jpegs) so it really is not an issue for me, or most people even shooting RAW as I do. I would happily take heavy vignetting over some Chromatic Aberration any day. As again if vignetting is not there at all I will often add a little anyway!

Of course a prime lens does lack the versatility and convenience of a zoom lens, obvious alternative candidates to consider (for me) were the Sony 16-35mm lenses. The Sony 35mm f2.8 itself its not a cheap lens. In fact its quite expensive for its size! However despite this to me it does represent reasonably good value for money, but Im not sure I can justify in writing my feeling for this. Maybe this is because the Sony FE 16-35mm f4 is more than half as much again (the Sony FE 16-35mm f4 is another brilliant lens) and the Sony FE 16-35mm f2.8 G Master is more than twice as much again. The Sony FE 16-35mm f2.8 GM is fantastic, but so is the f4, so unless you need f2.8 then the 16-35mm f4 is superb. But then I was brought back to the 35mm f2.8. I like its compactness, and performance. It easily fits in to any camera bag. If I had the 16-35mm I wouldn't need it, and the 16mm is nice if you are a landscape photographer, interior photographer and need to go wider. For most people if you need 35mm and wider, then the 16-35mm is the logical choice. But theres something I just like about the 35mm, and it stays with me on all shoots.

So its a lens that lots of people would like to hate (or at least disregard).... but its just a great little lens that repeatedly delivers stunning results.
As Frank Carson would say ... Its a cracker!
